THE MATCH AGAINST SURREY. MARGIN OF 143 RUNS. * SLOW BOWLERS IN GOOD FORM. (From the special correspondent of the United Press Association with the team). (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, July 30. New Zealand won the second cricket match against Surrey by 143 runs. Bereft of bowlers through the illness of Cowie, aild the leg trouble of Dunning, New Zealand delayed declaration until luncheon. Scoring briskly, Weir gave a fine display of clean hitting, his score including two huge sixes on to the roof of the pavilion, and six fours. Wallace was enterprising and hit eight fours. He was dismissed when a very fine throw-in hit his stumps. Gover was not particularly troublesome in either innings, but the pitch was enough to break the heait of anj fast bowler. He may- still be recalled for the third Test, but a big body of opinion favours Fames. Page, appearing in the usual role of opening the bowling, took a- wicket with his first hall. After this Suney scored rapidly. Instructions to get runs or get out were issued by Holmes when the score was 86. Gregory scored a brilliant century at the rate of a run a minute. He hit 13 fours. Surrey collapsed after tea before the slow howling of Moloney, Gallichan and Vivian. New Zealand’s success was doubly creditable in view of the perfection of the pitch and the depletion of the attack. The bowlers were supported by excellent catching. With Cowie, Dunning and Roberts on tlie casualty-list, the New Zealanders have a battle-scarred legion for the second game against Glamorgan. j Scores: — NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
