YUGOSLAV RIOTS

FUNERAL OF THE PATRIARCH. BATONS AND FIXED BAYONETS. MANY INJURIES INFLICTED. I united Press Association—Copyright. ► (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m). BELGRADE, July 29. Police with fixed bayonets are clearing the streets, where rioting broke out after the funeral of the Patriarch Varnava. There were hysterical scenes as members of the Youth Movement dragged the hearse; hearing a glass coffin, through kneeling crowds. Fifty bishops arrayed in goldembroidered vestments,, followed the hearse, but neither the Government nor the Catholic Church was represented. Men and women fainted. The crowd, shouting, “Down with the Government and the police!” attempted to penetrate the centre of the city. An unauthorised delegation tried to join the procession, starting a fight. The police charged with batons, and thousands of spectators fled wildly. There were similar scenes at Slavia, where many were injured. The roads leading to St. Sava Church were guarded by artillery and cavalry. A serajevo message states that over 100 were injured in rioting after church memorial services for the Patriarch Varnava.
