HINDS.
THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The seventh birthday party of the Hinds Women’s Institute was held in the hall yesterday afternoon, when Mrs J. McQuilkin presided over a good attendance. Representatives were present from Maj’field, and greetings were received from Maronan, Ealing and Lowcliffe Institutes.
The following programme was presented :—Pianoforte solo, Miss Betty Williams; pianoforte duet, Miss Lois Dellow and Miss Pat Williams; recitation, Miss Elivera Dellow ; one-act play, “Top Dog*” Mrs H. Dellow, Misses A. Frampton, L. and E. Dellow; song by the school children, with Miss White at the piano. Competitions were won by Mrs G. Harrison (Mayfield), Miss Dunstan (Mayfield) and Miss Elivera Dellow. The birthday cake, which was made and iced by Mr Wilson, was cut by Mrs L. Harrison (president of the Mayfield Institute). Mrs H. Dellow (secretary of the Hinds branch) was presented with a basket of sweets.
The hostesses were Mrs J. R. Kinvig, Mrs R. McElhinney and Mrs T. Williams.
WILLOWBY.
MISSIONARY AUXILIARY. The annual meeting of the Methodist Women’s Missionary Auxiliary was held at the parsonage yesterday afternoon, Mrs Avery presiding over a good attendance. Mrs R. J. Chapmpn was pianiste. Reports of the year’s activities showed an increase in membership and financial support. It was decided to hold monthly meetings in future. A letter was read from Miss Joyce Barnett.
The syllabus for the ensuing year was drawn up. At the October meeting the Rev. Belshazzar Gina will be the speaker. Misses Gladys Chapman and Marjorie Lill were appointed delegates to the conference to be held at Auckland. A duet, “Unanswered Prayer,” was sung by Mrs F. Chapman and Miss Margaret Palmer, Mrs A. S. Hayman accompanying. • It was decided to place “gleaners’ boxes” throughout the circuit. . Mrs R. J. Chapman was appointed to represent the auxiliary at the quarterly meeting. The following officers were elected: — President, Mrs Avery; vice-presidents, Mrs A. S, Hayman and Mrs R. J. Chapman; secretary, Miss G. Chapman i minute secretary, Mrs F. Chapman ; treasurer, Miss Hazel Lill; box supervisor, Mrs E. Roberts; trading table superintendents, Mrs J. Lattimore and Miss Ethelwynne Hayman; pianiste, Miss M. M. Lill; social conveners, Mrs G. Dakers and Miss Margaret Palmer. It ‘was reported that during the year many gifts were collected for the overseas missions, and several sacks of clothing sent to the sisters working in New Zealand.
Afternoon tea was dispensed, after which Mrs Avery was thanked for her hospitality. The trading table did good business.
ELGIN.
EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. A most successful euchre party and dance was held in the Elgin .Schoolroom last evening. There were nine tables of cards. Mrs Arnst won the women’s prize, and Messrs W. Begg, R. Leadley, J. Little and Beach played off for the men’s prize, Mr Begg winning. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing to Mr R. D'. Kinder’s music (piano and piano accordion). Extras were played by Miss E. Houston and Mr L. Pemberton. Mr Pemberton was M.C.
