COMMERCIAL NEWS
GRAIN AND PRODUCE, THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report a little more activity during the week. Very few lines of wheat are now offering and it would appear that there is little remaining to he dealt with. Fowl wheat is in keen demand and supplies are limited.
Oats have not been offering to any extent and the market remains unaltered.
Owing to heavy importations of oatsheaf chaff from Australia the North Island markets are fully supplied and there is no shipping demand. Values are easier.
The potato market is difficult to follow. Exporters have their commitments in hand and the only market will now be in the North Island. Inquiries were received from Auckland and 'Wellington during the week and sales were effected. Several buyers of forward potatoes have ordered their tubers to store and it is reported that large quantities are being stored at Timaru pending future developments in the market. The seed market should be brighter next month.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 28
Fat sheep, breeding ewes and porkers were easier at to-day’s Addington market, but fat cattle, store wethers and baconers were firmer.

Fat Pigs—There was an exceptionally heavy entry of porkers, and the market eased 2s a head except for heavyweights, which remained fully on a par with the rates of last week. Choppers showed very little change. The baconer sale was spirited throughout, and all classes showed an advance, particularly heavy-weights, which fully recovered last week’s drop of 5s a head.
