METHVEN. LABOUR PARTY’S MEETING. The monthly meeting, of the Methven branch of the Labour Party was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Hall on Monday evening. Mr R. W. Wightman presided over a record attendance. One new memtber was elected. Mr H. E. Herring, M.P., who received an enthusiastic welcome, gave an address in which he covered a wide range of subjects and discussed many points of interest to his audience. »He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Lodge Card Party. An enjoyable progressive euchre party was held in the Methven Town Hall last evening, in aid of the funds of the Hibernian 'Lodge. There was a very good attendance. The prizes were won by Mrs A. Grieve and Mr G. T. O’Brien, while consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Pat McCloy and Mr Newbury. HINDS. i l EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. The fortnightly euchre tournament conducted by the school committee in aid of the school funds was held in the school on Saturday evening. Mrs X Donaldson won the ladies’ prize and Mr T. Wells the men’s. Supper was served by the ladies.
LAGMHOR.
THE MISSIONARY UNION. There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Presbyterian Women’s Union, 'held in the church at Lagmhor, Mrs D. J). MacLachlan presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr M. J. Lowery. A missionary letter was read' from Sister Aileen, of Waimana. A collection was taken up for the proposed memorial to the late Mrs Morgan. Mrs Claude W. Anderson (Flemington) gave an interesting and inspiring address on the life and work of Francis Willard, and Mrs Ken. Taylor sang a solo. Miss H. Arnold thanked the speaker for her helpful address and Mrs Taylor for her solo. At the conclusion of the meeting afternoon tea was served. Bible Class Rally. On Sunday evening the Bible Class members and friends from Lagmhor, Tinwald and Flemington met for tea at 5 o’clock in the Lagmhor School, about 70 attending the tea. A hundred and seventy-six later attended ’the evening service in the Presbyterian Church at Lagmhor. The evening service was preceded by community hymn singing, Mrs W. Lill presiding at the organ. The church service was led by the choir of Flemington Presbyterian Church, under Mr Jack Johnston, the organist being Miss Joyce iPapworth. The service opened with a rendering of Psalm 43, verses 3 to 5 by the choir. The choir gave selections from the new anthem books and these were much appreciated. Mesdames Eric and Ken. Taylor sang a duet.
The preacher was the Rev. D. D MacLachlan (minister of the Parish).
MAYFIELD,
ENJOYABLE SOCIAL. An enjoyable time was spent on Monday evening, when the members of the Women’s Division entertained members of the Farmers’ Union (local branch) and members of the Young Farmers’ Club at a social evening in the Agricidtural and Pastoral Association’s rooms. The time passed pleasantly with games of flag 500. Mrs and Mrs' L. C. Mcllroy controlled the games and were accorded a vote of thanks.
The winners were: Miss W. Ellery and Mr L. It. Han'ison and Master J. Ellery. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mr A. McLay, Mr J. J. Mulligan and Mr S. Sowell.
On behalf of the members of the Farmers’ Union Mr J. Kingan (President) thanked the ladies for their invitation to be present, and Mrs J. D. Murdoch (president of the Women’s Division) replied. Supper was handed round by the ladies. /
