Buoyed up by a partly-inflated lifejacket, the body of Pilot-Officer Charles Houston, one of the two occupants of the ’plane that was missing, was found floating near Point Cook. No trace of Ernest Hyde was found..
A report published on Friday stated: 'An Air Force seaplane containing two pilot-officers, Ernest Hyde, aged 20, and Charles Houston, aged 23, which was last seen skimming the sea near Rye shortly before noon yesterday, has not been seen since. Searching ’planes found a large patch of’ oil on the sea eight miles from Point Cook, and Air 1 Force officers think this marks the place where the ’plane plunged into the water.
On Saturday it. was cabled that two fishermen reported that. they saw' a ’plane crash into the sea three miles from Point Cook at. noon op ,Thursday. n 1 rnm mmm
