AMATEUR BOUTS AT TIMARU. TIM ARC, This Day. Several amateur bouts were staged as a preliminary to the professional match last evening. Details are: — Welter-weight C. Blackett (11.0), Timaru,. beat G. Melrose (10.10), Ashburton, on a technical knock-out in the second round. Melrose was game, but was no match for his opponent. Neither R. Tonks (10.0), Ashburton, nor R, Hurst (10.3), Geraldine, possessed a punch, but while their condition. lasted they kept the spectators amused. In the third round the pair were so tired they could hardly keep their feet. Tonks won by reason of his aggressiveness.

Middle-weiaht. T. Lister (11.0), Ashburton, and C. Han'h am (11.11), Timaru, fought a draw r . In the first two rounds Hanliarn v r as ahead, connecting w'ith a good right, but Lister came back strongly in the nest two rounds, revealing a

solid left. He was the better boxer of the two.

J. Hill (11.3), Geraldine, beat D. McKendrish (11.0), Ashburton. The loser boxed gamely, but the decision was the correct one.

RAYNER BEATS SHARPE.

WELLINGTON, July 27

A large crowd at the Palace Theatre, Petone, to-night saw the • Blenheim light-weight, Clarrie Rayner, outpoint the Australian professional boxer, Jack Sharpe, in a 12-round contest. After each had done his share of forcing for 'nine rounds, the bout resolved itself into a battle of tactics, with Sharpe looking for a knock-out, and Rayner successfully keeping him at bay, darting in occasionally to land unexpected blows with both hands.

G!LDO BEATS JARVIS ON POINTS. TIMARTJ, July 27. “Young” Gildo gained a points decision over Jack Jarvis to-night- in a 15-round contest. The earlier part of the contest was rather tame, and at the thirteenth round the referee, Mr Tommy Fairhall, asked the contestants to “give a bit more action.” Gildo was particularly clever in all departments, but there was not a great eal between the two. 10NTANEZ KNOCKS OUT RAMEY.
