FATAL FALL FROM LADDER.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

Injured in falling and striking his head last evening, Mr Wilfred Harold Went, a married man, aged 43, of 29 Silvester Street. Woolston, died in the Christchurch Public Hospital. Mr Went had been employed by a contracting firm in cleaning the ceilings at Armstrong and Company’s premises in Victoria Square when he fell from a ladder, striking a glass showcase and falling heavily on to the floor.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING.

NAPIER, July 27

Joan Kane, a domestic, aged 17, was found dead on July 17 on the floor of the bathroom in the house where she was employed, after having a bath, the water being taken from a gas califont in the bathroom.

At the inquest to-day the Coroner (Mr J. Miller) returned a verdict that death was due to inhaling carbon monoxide gas, accidentally and l)y midadventure. The Coroner added that he hoped that periodical inspection would bo made of gas califonts, as people were not aware of the danger that existed from monoxide gas. During the evidence it was disclosed that the califont was not fitted to a flue pipe, and consequently' the fumes remained in the bathroom, the windows being closed.
