It sent word that the hnances or its union werfe closely considered and in view or the heavy expenditure to be faced this season, particularly in regard to its northern tour, it would not be possible to visit Ashburton this season. Members ware loath to have to make such a decision, but the difficulties confronting them could not possibly be overlooked. The South Canterbury Union advised that it thought if would be able to send a third grade team to Ashburton on August 7. Explanations why they did not appear in the Possibles v. Probables trial match were forwarded by J. Varcoe (Technical Old Boys) and I. Behrnes (Rakaia). Mr Thomson said Varcoe had arrived late, and when the player had arrived late he was not asked to go on. He had never let his side, or a representative 9ide down. Mr A. Doig said Behrnes had a bad cold, and did not like playing in the Wet. The explanations were accepted. The Old Boys Club forwarded an explanation of the default of its junior team on Saturday. The reason appeared to he the result of a misundeiv standing between the captain and vicecaptain of the team. It was decided to fine the club 10s, and tq award tho third grade game between Old Boys and Rakaia, to Rakaia. Methven Senior Winners. The senior competition was declared closed, Methven being the winners. It was decided to congratulate the Methven Club on being the first team to win this competition tliree years in sue cession. Instead of the senior competition it was decided to institute a knock-out competition. It was reported that the annual ball of the Union would be held on September 1. The South Canterbury Union advised that 20 preferential seats had been re served for Ashburton for the match, South Canterbury v. Springboks on August 28. Mr P. Doig said that players would prefer to have the High School ground for representative training owing to unsatisfactory conditions at the Showgrounds. The president said it was hoped that conditions would be rectified this week. The Draw for Saturday. The draw with referees, for Saturday is as follows: Senior, knock-out—Rakaia v. Methven, at Domain Oval (Mr S. Alexander) Public Works v. Old Boys, at Winchmore (Mr S. Pennall); Technical Old Boys a bye. Junior—Old Boys v. Methven, at Methven (Mr D. Wood); Rakaia v. Hinds, at Rakaia (Mr A. Shannon); Springburn, a bye. Third Grade—Old Boys v. Methven, at Showgrounds (Mr M. Betts); Alienton v. Technical, at Showgrounds (Mr G. Dalton); Hinds v. Rakaia, at Hinds (Mr F. Kennedy). Fourth Grade.—Technical A v. Allenton, at Domain (Mr T. Cates); High School v. Methven, at Showgrounds (Mr R. Rose); Methven a bye.
