THE PETROL TAX.

MOTORISTS SEEK ABOLITION. THE MAIN HIGHWAYS FUND. (Per. Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The motorists’ intention to ask for some relief from taxation this year was emphasised by Mr E. J. Anderson, speaking for the Automobile Association (Otago) at the annual meeting of the Otago Expansion League. He stated that they intended to seek extinction of the tax of 4Jd a gallon on petrol, which was imposed by the previous Government as an emergency measure, and accepted as such. Further, that the practice of paying subsidies on rates to local bodies should be abolished; that a diversion of Main Highways funds to the Consolidated Fund be definitely discontinued; and that the charging of interest on past free the Highways Board be discontinued.
