MR GERARD'S MISSION.
PRESIDENT WILSON'S ATTITUDE

The vStpck Exchange has recovered; this" is due to a feeling that though Germany wants peace, it is unobtainable except on terms agreeable to the Allies. Count Bernstorfi's appointment to visit President Wilson oh Monday is believed to be concerned with the peace movement. One report states that Bemstorff is authorised to settle tho Lusitajiia case on PresJclent Wilson's terms. ,
It is understood that Mr W. J. Bryan and - r H. Fovd are advising President Wilson to publicly urge peace, on the ground that whether it was successful or not, it would greatly improve the Democratic chances of winning the ejection.
I President Wilson is known to have a passion for peace, but has been restrained from mediation by Mr Lloyd George's declaration, also by a statement by Lord Robert Cecil, telegraphed ; to-day, as follows :—*-' Wo. do not ask favcmrs'.frbm neutrals, 'but we ask them' not tip' "hinder'- : <mr > belligerent rights,in''this ■life-ahd-deatli I'struggle'. 11
