SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOABD.

MONTHLY MEETING.!

Tho monthly'meeting of tho South Rakaia Road Board was held on Thursday. In the absence of the chairman, Mr H. J. Harrison, who forwarded an apology, Mr A. J. Magson occupied the chair. There were also present—Messrs J. Lainbie and A. Drummond.

In his report the clerk stated that the South Road was still in a bad state, as travellers would keep to the on track. Work had been carried out on tho Chertsey township roads, and on the "Wakanui Road. The board had cleared of gorse the frontage of one ratepayer, who would be charged with the cost*. The sump in Bowen Street had been seriously damaged by an oxcess of water from the raco, and .was in a dangerous condition. Some large boulders had been carted to the site. It was stated to be 40 years old, over 20 feet deep, and the timbers were rotten. It was decided to have it re.paired at once, using damaged halfpipes and boulders. Correspondence was received from tho Minister of Railways regarding a site for trucking yards, location of level crossings in the new railway yard scheme, and sign-posts at crossings* on th 6 Methven line. In each, case -the Minister^ stated that the Board's representations would receive attentioni ■"

It was decided to enlist the help of Mr W. J. Dickie, M.P., in the matters, also to write to the District Engineer with a view to arranging for the board to meet him,.in Rakaia and-go over the ground. .

Two changes in the ratepayers 1., a-01l were directed to be made.

Mr Edward Duncan made application for permission to make a roadway through the, plantation, adjoining.--.his property; so as to provide: him with another entranced; ;/ !

Tho matter was held, ovor 'till the expiration of the present lease' of the plantation.

Mr L.. Pluck wrote'asking that the. holes and rubs in Normandy and Mac-, key Streets should be filled in. ,

The matter was left to the clerk to attend to.

It was decided to fill in the de<*p ruts in tho road in front of the schools """ The subsidy on rates,, £166.0s 2d. for tho year ending March 31. was received from the Government, and accounts amounting to £135 2s Id were passed for payment.
