CHRISTCHURCH DAY BY DAY.

There were 19 enlistments in tho city 'yesterday.

The Chinese in Chris'tchureh annually send a donation to tho General Hospital funds, and this year the donation amounts to £24.

The Chris,tcliurch Boys' High School pupils are giving up their prizes this year again in order to obtain money for the purpose of providing each of tho old boys, of whom there 'arp now over 400 at the front, with a Christmas gift.

At yesterday's meeting of the executive of the, "Our Day" appeal on behalf of the Red Cross Fund, a letter was received from Dr A. F. r J. Mickle stating that although the workers in connection with the " Our Day" collection on Friday did splendid work, the-results of the day's collection did not reach tho figure it should hnvo done. The woather was a big handicap. He suggested a week of self-denial and effort; in order, that the, fund might reach a< suitable amount, say, £20,000. After discussion, tho' following motion was agreed to:—" That 'th 6 suggestion of Dr'Mickle b© adopted,' and that the self-denial week'bo from October 9 ,to October 16."

At a meeting of the General Committee of tho Canterbury Sheepowriers' Union held .yesterday, „the question df: the retention of tho Addington Saleyards, which occupy the position.of the chief metropolitan stock market in the. Dominion, was discussed, and the fol-; lowing resolution was passed unanimously: "That tho Canterbury Sheepowners' Union protests , against any local body having the power to make by-laws which interfere with the continuance of Addington as'the premier' metropolitan ( stock market for New Zealand and urges the taking of immediate stops to, contest the legality of the. by-law recently passed by the Riccarton Borough Council prohibiting the" travelling of stock npon any road of the borough within reasonable hours."
