FOSTERING LOCAL MANUFACTURES.
WELLINGTON, October 3. A deputation representing the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, j the Furniture 1 ■■ Trades i Workers, and; Boot Operatives' Federation,\ waited on \ the Hon. J. Allen and the Hon. W. H. , Herries this afternoon to urge legislation for the branding of all" local manufactures "Made in New Zealand." It, was pointed out that the largest boot manufacturers wero also' the largest indcntors,' r and that the tendency was to encourage the prejudice against the locally-made article in order to v malic larger profits on the im- j ported article. The Ministers' replies wero sympathetic' It was .stated that the request was largely a matter of policy^ and v that it was necessary to defer consideration until Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward W3re consulted. Ministers further stated that any. legislation ' would have to meet with the approval of Iho Labour Bills, Committee,, to which evidence would have"to be submitted to show that the ■ public now showed •no prejudice -against local manufacturers. • •■'
