THE CITY.

CHRSSTCHURCH DAY BY DAY.

At the meeting of the Tramway Board yesterday a deputation from tho Sprcyclon Borough Council; headed by the- Mayor (Mr W. H. Winsor), waited on the; board and asked that an extension of the tramway service should bo made in .the borough. Tho matter was referred to the Works and Traffic Committee for consideration.

The Mayor regards Monday, which marked the entry of Opawa into Greater Christchurch, as one of the important days in the city's history. Ho believes that Opawa's example will be followed soon by St. Martins, Avonside, and Cashmere, as the prospects for the Greater Christchurch scheme in those districts are bright. Bromley, also, he hopes, will come in, and he is looking forward to the inclusion of Fondalton, which, he points out, now may amalgamate with tho city and still retain its system of rating on the capital value, to which it is wedded.

Amongst recent additions to the historical collections :it .Canterbury j Museum is the log. of the steamer, Alma,' which was wrecked at Shag Rock, Sunnier, in 1856. Specimens of an oystor, Ostrea hyotis, found near Timarn, in 2o fathoms of water, have also been added. They ;tre about the same size as the Stewart Island oyster, 'j'lioy :h-o found in the "Indian Ocean and other places, but previously had been reported only from dredgings in Pelorus Sound as far as New Zealand is concerned. In the ornithlogical case there are a, handsome specimen ;of TCeeves's pheasant: a snecimen of the Xcv,- Zealand mnrsh rail; a sanderling, a migratory bird never previously reported from New Zealand; and a grey duck. ■' I
