THE BIG CASUALTY LISTS.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER OF DEFENCE.
WELLINGTON, October 2. Reference to the recent big casualty lists was. made. by the Defence Minister to-day, in reply to an enquiry as to whether, in consequence of the serious losses, more men would be sent from New Zealand.
" It must not be supposed tha/t theseheavy casualties will continue," said Mr Allen. "The winter/.will, be coming on soon, when our casualty lists will bo very much smaller, and our Reinforcements will accumulate again. Those recent losses were incurred in major operations in which our men were heavily engaged, and the chances are that they will bo relieved now for a little while. The rate of Reinforcements was fixed to meet an estimated loss, which has on the average not yet been"'exceeded. Wo are regularly sending; more than sufficient to make good those losses in the force. These recentbig lists cover the only very serious losses for the past six or eight months. Previously the casualties have been light and accumulation has been;going on. The last time I heard the figures, we had 5000 men at the base in England. Some, of these my have boon men recovering from wounds or sickness, but the bulk of them were Reinforcements in reserve."-
