The Otago military ■ district is confronted with almost :i hopeless task to avoid ■ tho humiliation of a rotiord shortage of recruits for tho ' Twentysecond Reinforcements next month. Under the now boundaries. Dunedin group, which formerly comprised practically the city alone, but now comprises in addition tho counties ' of Peninsula. Waikouaiti, and Tacri, has been called upon to find 262 men. This moans-that the total quota for the group has practically been doubled, requirements hitherto on an average having beon about 125. Otago district hi^ to find this time 582 men, or about 170 r.mre than usual, a consequence of previous shortages. Those most inr.imateiy associated with voluntary recruiting candidly admit that in existing circumstances their t:isk \i:s wellnigh hopeless. The position is most serious as regards tho Dunedin groin), which has to make good country shortages.
