THE ALLIES' SUCCESS ON THE SOMME.
A GERMAN EXPLANATION
(Received Oitob'or-2, 9 a.m.)
LONDON, October i. "Germany's latest explanation of th( Sommo lo'versfs is that tho AngloFrench infantry ai-e worthless, but thanks to "the Allies' overwhelming artillery they were sometimes enabled to rush fortified positions reducod to ruins. ■ ,
Thus, Horr Georg Queri, tho " Tageblatt's " military critic. : says:—" Infantry fighting is no longer man against man, but man against cripples, wounded, and dead. A trench is rushed only when it has been ,s blown to dust, and this is the enemy's confession that their infantry are ■"■of poor quality."
Queri overlooks the 50,000 unwounded prisoners taken on the Sprame, and forgets the eulogies officially bostowed on the German General Staff for .-sparing the infantry at*; Verdun by means of artillery preparation.
