FLOWER SHOW.
RNE DISPLAY AT METHVEN
(i'rom Our Travelling Reporter).
The annual Flowor Show under the auspices oi; the Methven All Saints' Cuui-oli V«itry, win heid in the Aieth- j yen Town Hall yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. The committee deserves to 60 complimented on having drawn up an attractive' schedule, which brought out keen 'competition, from residents in Methven and district. The season has evidently been most favourable for horticultural pursuits, as shown by the quality of the exhibits. There was good competition in practically every section in the schedule, and particularly so in bulbs, which occupied the major portion of the Bpace in the hall, and made a Loinprohcnshe display, which would be hard to beat in any horticultural 1; show. The majority of the bulbs were ■ not only well grown, but the staging ; showed that the exhibitors were by no ' moans novices, and were quite capable 1 of making selections from their gar-! dens best calculated to take the judge's ; eye. The pot plants were not quito so, numerous, but nevertheless some fine! specimens were oxhibitcd. A feature 1 of the cut flower classes was th<; comprehensive displays of flowering shrubs, w.-nuii were- plentiful, and .some of which wore novel. The old hi:Uorieal wall flowor also figured in the special collections in a competitive class, and when ranged on a bench alongside sereral collections of hyacinths, made a contrast which was pleasing to the eye. There was not much competition in the pansies and viola class, but one exhibit in the former was worthy of Bpecial mention. In the decorative classes, the ladies were afforded a good opportunity to display thoir skill, and oxquisito tasto was shown in arranging the table decorations. A pleasing feature of the show was the interest the children had shown in their respective classes, and some of the bulbs shown by the public school pupils were a credit to tho exhibitors. A good number of pupils competed in the classes for writing for boys and girls, aged 10 years and 14 years. Generally speaking, the specimens of work exhibited were of a nigh order. Several classes for vegetables had been included in the schedule, but it was only natural to expect at this season of the year that entries would be limited. In the collection of vegetables only one exhibitor came forward, and while some of the vegetables in his exhibit wore well grown, others in roots vrev® hardly tho-quality that would take prizes if exhibited in a cla-sfi 'on their own. T «-■->• h"-nf"lvs of sprx-ial exhibits, ono by Mr Bumelburg (Christchurch), and the other by Mr H. Arnold (Ashburton), were included in the show, and wore greatly admired by visitors. The; chief cookery exhibits in the miscellaneous classes were confined toscones and bread, and a lew exhibits of cake. Competition in the 21b. loaf of bread section was keen, and the judge had some difficulty in selecting the winner.
Visitors to the .sliow during the aftornoon were provided with ai'ternoon tea by lady members of the cluiroh.
