THE CITY.

CHRiSTCHURCH DAY BY DAY.

As a sequel to the lectures o.h social diseases recently delivered, and particularly those to women, a ladies' committee is in process of formation in the. city to place the odticational campaign on a firm footing.

Though the application for the inclusion of St. Martins riding of Heathcote County in the city was objected to in a report by- tho By-laws Committee of the City Council at it's meeting last evening, an amendment withdrawing the objection was carried, subject to St. Martins coming into the city on unimproved rating.

A letter from tho Minister of Internal Affairs, inviting the City Council to apply for the powers offered under the cost of living regulations, caused a lively discussion, in which a strong fooling was expressed in favour of municipal trading. It was finally resolved to inform the Minister that, owing to the faulty 'legislation tinderlying tho matter, no regulations could be of any use to the council.

"That all single men in the employ of the council without dependents be: discharged," was the form of a motion submitted to the City Council last night by Cr. H.. J. Otley. He said, that there wcro many returned soldiers walking about looking for jobs. Thei motion was not very cordially received, on the ground that most of the single men would be found to be unfit, and Cr. Otley therefore held it over for further information.

The secretary to tho Christchurch Beautifying Association has received the following letter from the Town Clerk regarding tho proposals for the beautifying of Cathedral Square:—" I am directed by his Worship the Mayor to acknowledge receipt of your letter of September 22 in reference to the calling of a public meeting regarding the beautifying of Cathedral Square. In reply I am to inform you that the Mayor has seen the Tramway Board on the matter, and, as the board will, be ready ,to submit its proposals shortly, it is thought inadvisable tocall the public meeting until these proposals have been, considered by the conference."
