SHORTAGE IN OTAGO

DUNEDXN, September 26

Ti-ero is mxd of a boom in recruiting in Otago, as in other centres. The shortage for the whole district last week was 70, and the effort to reduce j the deficiency within a few days can i oniy be described as a lamentable failure. Less than a score of recruits were secured, and sent to camp •■ yester- , day. It is as yot too early to speak definitely of tho prospects for the Twentysecond Roinforcoments. Although a fair, number of men have attested here, it would seem that local bodies are "marking time for compulsion.
