Correspondence.
A letter was received from the Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of, Internal Affairs, enclosing an extract of the Cost of Living Act, and stating that the Government was prepared to consider applications from Borough Councils for making, of regulations conferring the powers contained in that' section.—Received.
Tho Borough School Committee wrote pointing out that the increasing motor traffic .in tho vicinity of the school was:.a source of danger to children, and asked the council to erect suitable warning boards indicating to motorists that they 'are approaching a school.—Tho Mayor was authorised to confer with the chairman of the school committee regarding the most suitable site on which to place tho boards.
• Joseph Sherlock -wrote- giving ono month s notice of his intention to cancel the contract for slaughtering at the abattoirs.—lt was decided to accept the notice, and the question of the contract was referred to the Abattoir Committee.
A letter was received from Mr J. Virgo, asking tlic council to arrange for holding a meeting upon his arrival in Ashburton, in order that he could address citizens upon the the V.M.C.A. hutment scheme.—lt was decided to arrange for an open-air meeting on the afternoon of his arrival. A circular was received from Napier, setting out Sir Robert Stout's recently published views upon purchasing American goods, and pointing out the necessity of buying only goods made in Now-Zealand, Australia, Great Britain find the Allied countries.—The council decided. to express its approval of the proposal
