Mr A. A- Stuart Monteath, barrister and solicitor, president of.'.the.-Mode-rate League, and at one time manager, of the National Bank at Reeftira,. afterwards member >. of Parliament for Inangah.ua and for Wellington, died at Wellington yesterday, after a long ilLness, aged 65 years.
Our Mayfield correspondent writes-ii Occasion was taken at the valedictory, social held last" Thursday night, in. the Band Hall, to make a present to Mr Powell, who has enlisted and will shortly bo going- to Trenthani-.. Th© l\cv. JP. Wilson delivered an interesting address. The presents were a. set oi military brushes and a sh&vinjj, outfit, accompanying which was a Testament from the Rev. P. Wilson.
At the Ashburton. Borough, Council mooting last evening Cr. G. D. H. Ifefiord moved, and Cr. Andrews .'.eciiiided. that :\ letter of condolence be forwarded to Mrs. A. J. Childs and family; also to Mr. Childs, sen., expressing the Council's deep sorrow at the loss of Major A. .T. Childs, who during his lifetime in" Ashburton, and at the front, greatly assisted this Dominion in defence and military training. The motion was carried in the xisual way, the Council standing.
