RECEIPTS AND EXPENDITURE

Tho Internal'Affnirs'Department haa received from Mr P.. A. McHardy, of Palmerston North, promoter of. the Anzac Art Union. a statement of accounts in connection.therewith. The; following-are particulars : —Art union license granted was for 200,000 tickets at Is each, but the number sold was 376,720. The gross returns were £18,830. From this sum the following payments were made (shillings and f pence omitted): — i-" . £ ■ Commission for- sale of tickets... 1163 Advertising ... ... ... 1467 Salaries and wages ... ... 130 Sundries ... 120 Travelling and show expenses ... 138 Printing and stationery ... ... 488 Total ....,:... .... ...£3509 Leaving ;£].■>, "320 available for the .soldiers' ho.vtel at Palmerston North, for whioli tho money was raised. I The Minister of Internal Affairs | (tho Hon. G. \V. Russell) stated to-day | that the large expenditure incurred ooi!id not be regarded as satisfactory, and compared very unfavourably with that of oth'H' art unions which had been licensed. For instance, he said, the raffle of a house at Dannevirke realised £72.'>7. and the "^expenditure was only £45. .Ah a, resultJof the expenditure on the Anssae Art Union, he I added, a limit wil) be placed on the l?p;al expenditure- in all similar cases for tiio future.
