ENROLMENT CERTIFICATES.
BIG SHORTAGE OP APPLICATIONS.
WELLINGTON, September 20. The Government Statistician has sent out 146,000 acknowledgments of certificates of enrolment. This number would appear to reveal a very big shortage, for it was expected that there would be 200,000 members of the Reserve. ■ . .
It is the opinion of the- Statistician that the shortage is accounted for by tho fact that many of the men enrolled on the National Register did not make replication for certificates, but let their registration stand. Their action will cimse a great deal of work, because the police will have to trace them flown to ensure that they are at their former addresses.
No obligation was imposed on anyone who was 'already enrolled on the National 1 Register ;,i* all' that the law requires of nnian is that he shall be -eiirolled. 1 arid' the ■duty" and risk-of wirig that Vo is enrolled i<s put upon him personally. Apparently a groat T^nny won have been content to take ■that risk. . \-L;
