A very -enjoyable overling was ,spent in £lie Baring Square # Church schoolroom last evening, when a debate was hold between teams representing the Baring Square Debating Society and the Sti Andrew's Club.. The subject of debate was "That we should not foncourago- trade with America after the war." After "a very even • debate,, the judges (the. Rev. "\V. C. Blair and Mr T. M. Clark) gave. their decision in favour ".of Baring Square (negative) by 180' points to M&h Messrs R. Jones and Judge represented Baring. Square, while Messrs Chisholm , and Pryov spoke for ' St; Andrew's. A dainty supper' was provided by «tho ladies of tho Baring Square Clmreh.
An illustration of some of the great shipping profits,' that are being made out of the war is afforded in recent balance-sheets. Furness, Withy, and More's profits .for the year ended in April last were ■£1,386,960, on an issued capital of £3,500,000, of which half is in 5 per cent; preferences.
