NfcWS AND NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondents.)

MAYFIELD

The anniversary tea meeting in connection with the Mayfield Methodist Church took place in the Band Hall on Thursday evening. In spite of a very cold sou-wester, there was a splendid attendance of friends from all parts of the district. The tea was tastefully laid out in the supper room of the hall, and a band of Mayfield ladies spared no pains in attending to the wants of .the friends who sat down to tea. Shortly after 8 p.m. the chairman (the Rev. W. E. Sleep) opened thr> meeting. The audience sang "All People: that on Earth do Dwell,"; Miss' Gaarder accompanying on the piano. Prayer was then offered by the Rev. G., Frost, of Ashburtori. . The chairman, in his address,, briefly outlined the work done in the'church during the past year. He informed those present that lie had a long and interesting programme, and asked the audience to refrain from demanding encores. Songs were given by Misses Williams, Gaarder, Patersbn, Jaine, Oakley, and Fleming, and Messrs McMillan, J3uuz, and A. Williams; violin solo, Miss Foster, of Lismore School; and Miss Brown and Miss Itosa Brown, of Ashburton, each rendered some capital recitations. The chief feature of the programme was an addreess given by the llev. li. Tahu Potiki Haddon. In his address the visitor outlined the early history of the Maoris from the coming of'the Rev. Samuel Marsden. He was listened to very attentively, and his remarks were much appreciated. The Rev. Messrs G. Frost and P. Wilson also delivered addresses. In a comprehensive vote of thanks, the chairman thanked all who had in any way assisted in making the meeting so successful. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem, the Benediction being pronounced by the Rev. Mr Hacklon.
