THE HONOURS LIST

LONDON, September 15. Tho awards in connection with the [ battle of Jutland are announced in a Gazette. The Order of Merit is bestowed upon Sir John Jellicoe. Arising out of tho recommendations of Sir John Jcllicoe's supplementary! despatches, a largo number.of honours are- given. Sir Edward Beatty receives a Knight Grand Cross of the' Bath. Tho following are made Knights Commander of t,he Bath:— Rear-Admiral H. Evan-Thomas. Rear-Admiral W. C. Pakenham. Jtear-Admiral Horace L. A. Hood (killed in action). Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Keith Arbuthnot (killed in action). Thirty-threo are made Companions of tho Bath, including the following:— Rear-Admiral Ernest F. A. Gaunt. Rear-Admiral Ludovic Duff. . Rear-Admiral Arthur C. Leveson. Rear-Admiral Sir Wm. R, Kennedy. Rear-Admiral S. Nicholson. ; Rear-A.dmiral Seymour. The Knight Grand Gross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George is conferred on:— Vice-Admiral Sir Cecil Burney. Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George:— Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick C. D. Sturdee. Vice-Admiral Sir Thomas H. M. Jerram. Forty-two Distinguished Service Orders are given and 13 Distinguished Service Crosses, including the Rey. Anthony Pollen', a Roman Catholic ! Chaplain, who carried burned men from > the deck though ho was himself severely burned. '

Sir David Beatty's captains have been larpo-Iy rewarded. Captain Chatfield. of the Lion, is made a Companion of tho Order of St. Michael and St. Goorgo. Captain Cowan, of the Princess Royal; Cantain Pelly, of the Timer; Captain Hoaton Ellis, of the Inflexible'; and Captain Green, who commanded and fought the New Zealand with "great skill and gallantry," and also the captains of three, light cruisers, received the Companionship of the Bath. Commander Dannreuthcr, who controlled the Invincible's fire Avith an I overwhelming result ori the enemy .until tho Invincible blew up, receives I tho D.S.O. The Warspite figures prominently in the honours list. Captain Phillpotts is given a companionship of the Bath for 4'splendidly handling hi a battleship after the steering-gear broke down.' Also, when she was nearing the Firth of Forth, much damaged, three submarines attacked her, but Captain Phillpotts brilliantly brought his ship to port Safely. ,The awards include two Victoria Crosses. . Commander Edward Bing- ' ham, of the destroyer Nestor, who is 'now a prisoner of war, for "gallantly ■ leading his division against destroyers, ' and then battle-cruisers. He finally sighted tho battle fleet, and, though he was only followed by the Nicator. the sole remaining destroyer of his division, , ho closed within 3000 yards with drmitlosb courage in order to fire torpedoes. The Nestor and Nicator sustained the concentrated fire of • the High Seas 'fleet's secondary batteries. The Nestor i subsequently sank." Major Francis I Harvey, of the Marines, is also givrn jthe Victoria Cross. Although mortally I wounded, and almost the sole survivor, after a shell had exploded in the gunhouso he, with great presence of mind, ordered the magazines to be flooded, thus saving his ship. He> died soon afterwards.
