Ashburton Markets.

MESSRS MILES AND CO., LIMITED. Messrs Miles and Company report on the weekly stock sale, held at the Ashburton yards, on Tuesdaj February 28 :— Quite a busy time was., experienced at this fixture, entries of sheep crowding in from daylight until after the sale commenced, and the availableyards beingovertaxed extra pens had to be provided. In sheep the totals were 19,147, in cattle 54 head, and 11 pigs. An unusually large audience was present, but buyers, in view of the heavy entry of sheep, acted with hesitation, and the sale was somewhat dragging throughout. The sheep market was largely' supplied with medium, and inferiqr descriptions, which met aqnieter demand and lower rates, Butchers' sheep and stock for freezing were oniy moderately represented, and several good lines sold satisfactorily, realising a »hade better values than prevailed at last Tinwald market. Good quality lambs were slightly lower in value, whilst second rate lots and also merino wethers were decidedly reduced in price with slack demand. With more of the recent welcome rain values will no d(jubt return to their former ievel, as large numbers of pastoraiists and farmer* are now in quest of sheep. We obtained 16s for a good line of freezing crossbreds, othgr lots selling down to }4ssd. j Pat lambs madi up to 12s Id, two-toOths to }4s, fat merinoWes up t0'7.8 3d, Six antf eight-tooth crossbred ewes for breeding realised from 12s to 15s Id, stofe lambs were sold from 8s s'd to jOs Qd, Qur sales were 2^ crossbred ewes at 10a 3d, 30 fat crossbreds at 13s 7d, 138. fat halfbred wethers at 16.*, 140 merino ewes at 6s, 281 crqssbred ewes at 103 10d, 193 crossbred ewes at 7s 6d, Privately we have sold yoirng merino ewes and sheep for freezing 'at satisfactory rates.

Besides the large and commodious sheep yards the cattle and pig pens were made use of. The attendance of buyers and others was very good, and although many thought that on account of the large entry a drop in price would take place, such was not the case, as all lines of young healthy sheep met with good competition, and a very good clearance was effected at prices equal to late sales. The only line* of sheep which were not competed for were old merino ewes and merjy> wethers. The following are the prices realised at auction:-In fat sheep there was not a very large entry and nothing of special quality. Fat crossbred ewes so a at from 9s 4d to 10s 6d, and up to 13s 6(1 for heavy weights; fat crossbred two-tooths from 13s 3d to 14s ; merino ewes from 6s 6d to 8s , merino wethers, 6s 6d. There Was a large entry of cattle which sold at full market rates, and meeting with good competition from local butchers. j Store Cattle—The presence of a Southern' I buyer made things lively, and all lots were disposed of at full rates. . , Last Thursday we attended the opening of the new yards at Rakaia. There was a largs attendance, and although bidding at auction was rather slow and dull, most lots cleared at ruling market rates. MR DAVID THOMAS. Mr D. Thomas reports upon the the live stock market in the Ashburton county for the week ending March 1, as follows :*— On Tuesday at the Ashburton yards there was the largest entry of sheep which we have seen for over twelve months. Amongst them were some good lines of exceptionally good sheep, notably SStytwo-toothcrbssbreds for Mr E. Takug into consideration the large entry of stock a very good clearance was made, and the fall in prices was not as much as inighr. have bien expected. Hiuds Sale.—On Monday last the usua monthly sale was held in the new yards. There was a good entry of about 4000 sheep, •ml a fair clearance was made, fat sheep being sold up to 14s 9d. I sold for various clieuts 186 merino ewes at 5d 6d, 266 merino ewes at 4s 6J, and 254 lambs at 10s. The sa,l« of horses, etc , was far from lively. Out of 43 horns there were not a dozen worth finding. It < always appears to me that some people have > nothing else to do but pay entry for Bcrews ' at the Arcade. lam sorry to say that there are far too many horses of this sort in our district. The enquiry? for good, young, sound, staunch draught horses is' just as good as evei, and-twenty could be readily sold every Saturday if yon could get them.
