Ashburton Football Club.
I The following ia the Committee's report, to be presented to the fiist annual general meeting of the Ash burton Foot'iall Club, which will be held next Saturday evening at eight o'clock at Gates' School of Music :— . la presenting their first annual report your Committee have much pleasure in remarking upon its favorable tone. Though it was generally believed *t the time of the Club's inauguration that football was a thing of the past as far as Ashbunon was concerned, yet by the aid of a few indomitable spirits, the Club throve, and at the end of the season showed a most creditable record, namely : —9 wins, 1 draw, and 3 losses; 107 points ware scored against 62 ; 35 tries against 16, and IJ. goals against 9. Waihi was virtually the only Club to which our men had to lower their colours, for Timaru only escaped defeat at our hands by the rarest good luck. It is also a matter on which your Committee sincerely congratulate the Club that the second fifteen went through the season without tha blemish of a single defeat. Notice was taken of good play by boys, in the direction of electing" some of them free memberships of the Club. A noticeable feature of the Club was th« healthy tone and good feeling among members. On the field of play the discipline was generally good, and that this will always be tjiecase is the earnest wish of your Committee. We hope that our representatives will always leave their captain to maintain their rights, and that they will ever discourage by their example and censure not only rough and unseemly play, but also noise and wrangle. Let them ever remember also that a referee^ decision is always a correct one according to football law and the instincts of a true sport sir an. A pleasing feature of our matches and practices last year was the support accorded U3 by the public. By their attendance and patronage they assisted the Club materially. Your Committee would draw spsc^al attention to the Club's indebtedness to TVfr Thomas for msny kindnesses. ToSecretary L. Matsonmu ih of lastyear's i success was due, and your Committee re- ! u .ived his resignation with sincere regret. In the rules of the^ Club which were adopted fit the cjos« of Jast season you will'notice provision'was made for a second fifteen captain, Tfte carrying out of this rule, the Committee confidently expect, will do much to create enthusiasm add emulation among the junior members. With regard to tjiese junior members we would suggest to the incoming Committee that lhey: give them every consideration, for our Club will undoubtedly fall qr stand witjj their fapipe or success. It will be necessary to have a reliable ljst pf matches for second and even third ifjffeens made as early as possible—especially tl>e Qhristcfoupoh futures..
