THE GALE.

The "Timaru Herald" says the gale of Monday at Pleasant Point must have been travelling at the rate of fifty mile* per hour. Large trees were snapped, others were completely uprooted. The school was in some danger from fallinj trees, and the pupils were removed from the infant department. The barometer fell nine points and read 28*8. Several stacks were blown down, and the orchards have suffered to an alarming extent. The gale was severely felt at Temuka. The drill shed was shifted three inches on its foundations, the Royal Hctel had part of the roof stripped, some large windows were blown in, the rope walk at the flax mill was blown down, and scores of frees broken and uprooted in the park and elsewhere. All over the district the stooks were scattered, and stacks' torn open. v The heavy gale did some small damage at Oamaru. Stooks were flattened, a few windows blown in, and' orchards and gardens damaged. The full force of Monday's gale was felt in the Geraldine district, many trees being uprooted or denuded' of th«ir branches.
