THE FLOWER SHOW.

The second annual exhibition of the resuscitated Ashburton Horticultural Society takes place on Saturday next in the Arcade, which, through the courtesy of Mr David Thomas, has been made available for the purpose, and will admirably serve for the display of the exhibits, and the comfort and convenience pf victors and aji concerned. Qiven a tine day, it will qq doubt be well patronised by the public, including—as the harvest will by that time, it is to be hoped, have been safely gathered in ~-\ Urge proportion of our country fiiy.i.lis, who will be able to spend an hour or two very pleasantly at the Show in admiring the exhibits and ltntgnins? to !'>.-■ strains of the band. The date fixed is unfortunately a little too early for the season, which is a fortnight later than visual as regards, the maturity of autumn fruits, and indeed as regards also some classes of vegetables and flowers. The Committee of Management was quitjp aware of this fact, and endeavoured to arrange for the postponement of the Show to a fore-j night's later date, but it was found: thqt this was for several reasons impracticable, among others because the Arcade would not then have been obtainable. But, although, had, it been possible to h.ojd. the Shaw somewhat ' later a better display of some' classes of exhibits might have been looked for, there is nothing to prevent there being a la^rge ajiq creditable Show oi} Satijrday next, if our professional and amateur horticulturists determine, as we hope they wilj, to, do their best to make it so. The Society's catalogue cqmpris.es. a long and liberal list of awards, including a goodly number of private prizes,, but it is $Qtj merely those who WJU pqm.pefce far the ', sake iof these whqtn we loqk to see ' supporting this very useful Society by sending exhibits, but also ajl who desire to see our annual Flower Show increasingly popular and successful ] The fostering of a lov© of horticulture for its own sake is very desirable, and has a practically beneficial effect, for in improving the surroundings of the j Routes of the town mi district

their money value as propertips j is appreciably enhanced; while life is unquestionably the more enjoyable the rrore beautiful its surroundings. We therefore urge upon all who wish well to the district to help to make the Show a success notonly by supporting the Committee by their patronage and presence, but also by exhibiting—not for „the prizemoney's sake but for the show's sakfl. Not only should those exhibit who have something of such special excellence as to give, them a good chance of being placed first, but all who have anything creditable to display in the shape ot either pot^plants, cut flowers, fruit, or vegetables, or any or all of these, for as it takes a great many people to make up a world, or even a considerable community, so also it requires a great many exhibits to make up a creditable Horticultural Show. Let everybody then do hia or her beat to help, for this is a matter in which the ladies can assist greatly, and let it be remembered that as regards articles for competition for prizes these muet I be entered with the hon. secretary, Mr Lechner, at Davis' rooms, corner of East street and Burnett street; before 6 p.m. of Thursday next, 16th instant, and delivered at the Arcade before 9 a.tn. of Saturday. i
