ASHBURTON.
The monthly meeting of the Ashburton School Committee was held in the school l»Bt- nigh,t. Present—Messrs. Beau (iv tjlie chair). Mcl'herson, Paul, Jones, Meddius, Braddell, and Barrett. The bank balance was reported at £20. - CuiTtttpondenoe from the Board of Education {w-jw read—accepting Percy ftuvell as pupil teacher, advising chat the clerk of works would inspect the schools and caretaker's cottage re painting, enclosing salaries for January, and forward" ing the names of the candidates for election to the ftaard. Messrs H. W. Peryman, C, W. Adams, and R. Meredith, were voted for,by the Committee. The Visiting Committee reported on some repairs »nd new culvert for school entrance. ; Messrs Paul and Braddell were appointed a Visiting Committe for the month. Accounts for prizes and sundries were passed for payment. A letter was read from Mr H M. Jones re pupil teachers papars. This had been replied to by the Chairman, and tha explanation was accepted by Mr Jones. The head master's report was read and adopted. It stated number on mil—Boys 291, girls 264, total 555; highest attendance 469. Thirty-eight scholars hare been admitted this term. The school reopened on Monday, January 30, with an attendance of 460. The headmaster suggested that a .plan by which prices would be given for regular attendance during the year should Ibe initiated. This was agreed to, and ' the new Committee would be asked to carry out the arrangements. The headmaster ssked the Committee to approach the Domain Board, and try to arronge that the boys, under* responsible teacher, be allowed to bathe between 12.30 and 1.20 on school days. The Committee was unanimous in their approval of this; and Messrs Meddins, MoPherson, and the headmaster were appointed to wait on tho Domain Board on Monday evening next. The Committee, then adjourned.
