Great Fire at Hastings.

TWENTY-TWO BUILDINGS ' DESTROYED. | ESTIMATED DAMAGE £50,000. [PKK PRESS ASSOCIATION] Napier, February 9. Tht following placei were burnt:— Jull's Hastings Hotel ; Wicket*, diaper ; Clioug Kee, grocer ; Tyerman and Broad, chemist; New Zealand Clothing Factory; Hannah's boot shop ; Hyde, tobacconist; i McEwan, draper; Roche, draper; ' Sroythe, stationer ; William's and Ket'.le'o ; store ; Maddibon and On., store ; Robson, j watchmaker ; Greene, commission agent; Btnk of New Zealand; Maxwell's restaurant; Dennett's office* ; Bank of New South Wales; Mayo, furniture; Sir W. Wastney'a law offices; Simpson, shooting gallery ; and a large building in course of erection for Maddison and Co. Hastings h«s only one manual engine and a small private one, and the water supply is low pressure, The Brigade worked admirably, and saved the Pacific Hotel. A strong breeze was .blowing, but fortunately lulled, or half the town wculd hare been destroyed. Although the fire broke out when everyone was asleep, no lives were lost and no one waa injured There were some narrow escapes from filling chimneys. The insurances, so far as a corUined to-night, amount to £20,151.
