London, February 4. Mr Gladstone, replying to Mr Labouchere's amendment, said that the Government wanted anthentic information before forming a conclusive judgment relative to Uganda. Under pressure he implied that Sir G. Portal would unofficially exercise authority in the interval between the time of sending in his report and the decision of the Government. Mr Labouchere replied that it would be disgraceful if the Government quitted office without doing something to precipitate the evacuation of Egypt. Mr Gladstone said that the Government were striving to maintain external and internal order in Egypt during the occupation by the British, and would preserve harmony with the native Government. The Government were fully determined not to drift back. Messrs Stanhope (Liberal) and Lindsay (Conservative) have been nominated for the Burnley seat in the House of Commons, vacated by Mr Jabez S. Balfour, who has fled from the country.
