While the circus paraphernalia was being packed up he slipped away m the darkneßß, and forced open a grooer's shop where he demolished a cheese, two boxes of bisouits, and other goods, The Chase National Bank, of New York, had on exhibition recently a bar of gold that was facetiously offered to anyone who would, unaided, carry it away. It was forwarded to the Chase by its correspondent, the Montana National Bank. It is said to be the largest bar oi gold ever made. Its weight is a little over 500 pounds, and its cash value 100,346,290 dols. It was run at the United Stateß Assay Qffioe at Helena from the product of several mills. The Key 0. The work is being carried on at Marslin, where ten beds are being worked. So deep are these beds that although a depth of 150 feet has already been attained there is as yet no sign of their being exhausted. The industry is m the hands of company, which employs about 300 hands, Thirty-three boilers are m use, besides washing and distilling apparatus, and steam sawmills and forges. With the improved machinery obtained from Europe about 3000 oases are produoad per month. The paraffin extracted is used for the manfaoture of oandlea. We are m reoeipt of a copy of the statistical chart of New Zealand prepared by Mr W. D. Meareß, the managing direotor of the Union Insurance Company, Ohristohurob. It ib a reduced reproduction of the large ohart whioh waa firat exhibited at the Chamber of Commerce and is now displayed m the Exhibition at Dunedin. It is a most valuable compilation, showing as it does m a manner whioh renders the information easily appreciable, beoause seen at a glance, the present population of the colony and its relative growth during various periods from 1853 to 1689, also the revenue, expenditure, imports, exports, savings bank deposits, banking returns, gold exported, ooal raised, wool locally used, hands employed and oapital invested m manufactures, the mileage of open lines of railways and receipts from same, mileage and receipts .of telegraph lines, tonnage of shipping inwards acd outward?, amount expended on education and number of scholars, exports of tallow, tinned meat, flour, oheese, butter, wool, frozen meat, wheat, oats, barley, potatoes, flax, gum, and timber, the approximate divisions of the land showing the area of Maori and Crown land, the area of the latter sold or reserved, and the area open for seleotion, and whether open, forest, or moun* tain, also the number of horses, cattle, sheep, *nd. pigs, the public debt with particulars of c» V " re * e eDts ot PUblio bodies and private persons, au^ the national wealth as represented by publio lands, puu.." 1 buildings, railways, telegraphs, and real and personal property. On New Tear's Day Mass will be celebrated at Aehburton at 10 a.m., and on the first Sunday of the new year (Jan. sth) Mass will be oelebrated for the first time m the new ohuroh at Methven. At Dunedin on Tuesday Miss Isabella Hialop, youngest daughter of the late Secretary for Eduoation and Bister to the Minister at present m oharga of that Department, was married to Mr H. Hi Hare, Manager of the Gore Branch of the Colonial Bank. The wedding exoited a good deal of interest looally. The Rev Dr Staart waa the officiating minister. Louisa M, Koapp, editress of the " Ladies' Home Journal," claims to receive the largest salary of any woman m Amerioa. She ia paid £2000 a year for oonduoting : the paper under her oharge, whioh is a publication not muoh over ten years of age, and has a circulation of over five hundred thousand, a result due entirely to the ability of its talented editress. Miss Knapp, now Mrs Curtis, is a woman of medium height, slender, and with a faoe rather interesting than pretty? She is said to be a noted housewife, and manages her handsome home as suooess* fully bb Bhe manages her journal. Among the latest reoruits to current journalism, according to the "Sheffield Independent," U Mias Helen Gladstone, Her articles will deal with subjects of epeoial interest to women* Miss Gladstone has had sufficient experience of women to warrant her m speaking with some authority on their affairs. For nearly ten years she has been closely oonneoted with Newnham College, Cambridge, first as a student, and than as secretary to Mrs Sedgwirk, whom she succeeded as vice-principal of the College, m whioh capacity Miss Gladstone resides during term time at Sedgwiok Hall, named m honour of its former vioe-prinoipal, We olip the following important testimonial from the " Illawarra Mercury " (N.S.W.) of the 30th Maroh. It needs no comment : — " Mr John Loveday, of the Bulli Mountain, writes to us that after suffering for four yeara with aoute gravel, he has experienced almost oomplete relief by using Sander and Sons 1 Euoalypti Extract.
