ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
The ordinary meeting was held last night, Pteient— Tae Mayor and Ore Wllliamßon, FrledUnder, Scott, Keir, Oathbarteou, Maofar'aae, Brooke, and Scaly. M&IOB'S STATEMENT. The Mayor sold that the debit balanoe at tbe bank was £1251 8a 7d. The amounts which had been received since last meeting were : — Rates, £61 16a ; rents reserves, £7 ; licaaees, £2 ; earth ■oil, £1 83 ; refund water supply, mills, £23 14s 4d ; rent of ponud, £7 13s 6d. Total, £103 lls 10 i. The amount of rates outstanding was £114 6s. CORRESPONDENCE; Letters were read (1) From Mr 0, Gh Moore, Dunedln, with reference to Eareka Bystera of disposing of night soil,— Received. (2) From Mr A. 0. Prltchaid applying for lease of Borough .Reserve. The offar was accepted. (3) From Mr R. Fffzzall, Secretary of tbe Ashburton Cycling Ciub acknowledging receipt of Oounoll's permission to use Domain track, aod stating that they would pay their contribution when the track was la thorough good order for oyoliog purposes. In another letter tbe Secretary of the Cycling Olab wrote as follows :— " I have been dlreoted by tbe ABhburton Cycling Club to write a few plaia words to yoo (the Engineer) re the track, it eeomi the making of the track has been entreated to you, and we have a good idea who to blame for tbe confounded humbugging we hive been put tj. Through a lamp of foolishness, letting tae horaes tramp round and round on the soft day, the track has been completely epollt— it la all heights and hollows. Look along close to the groand and you will see for yourself. The snifrtoe must be again broken bufore It can be made even aod level ; any amount of watering, harrowing and rolling might make it fairly good for this year, Believe rae the Cycling Olab rather than put up with a nuisance much longer, will look round and find a tvaok elsewhere." — Or Williamson moved that the letter be oot received. — Or Frledlaader said thn he would go for her than that, and move that tbe letter be returned. — Or Outhbertson thought that unless apology were made for the expressions o ntalned m the letter the permission to hold their sports meeting m the Domain should be withdrawn. — Or Brooke agreed with the remarks of Or Outhbertson, and Or Williamson concurring, tbe motion was nude to read rb follows " That the letter be returned with an intimation that unless tbe Olub apologise and withdraw the eff iua ye reooarks contained m it, the petmijiion to use the ground will be withdrawn." — Or Keir seconded the motion. As the track was now it was unfit for riding, and the Olab after having been pat to considerable expense bad for this reason to postpone Its meetIng from Deoember 16 h. A deputation some time ago waited on the Oounoll, and they were promised that the track would be put m order the following day. Nothing was done, and his opinion was that the Oounoll were very good at promising and slow at fu filing.— The Mayor and O* Williamson challenged the final remarks of Or Maofarlano, and said that the Oounoll had done all it possibly could.— Or Kair Bald It was trae that the deputation were promised that tho track would be put m order the next day, and h« knew for a faot that the following morning men were pat to work on it .—The Engineer said that as maoh h»d been done to tbe traok as the limited quantity of clndera obtainable pormltted, and he hid over and over again Informed the oyollsts that the track waa not finished, but as maoh had been done as possible. — Or Brooke said that he agreed with the tenor of the motion, bat thought the other societies should be lnolndedt — Councillors generally oonourred, bat it was polnied out that the Caledonian Society had agreed to pay its contribution when asked for, a,nd several Councillors drew a distinction between the aotlon of that Soolety and of tbe Bioyole Club In the matter. — The motion was carried. — Ir, was also decided to apply to tbe Caledonian Society for its oonIrlbutlon. THE LICENSING QUESTION. The Cyollug Olab wrote applying for peemlaaion to hive a pablioan'a booth on the ground In the Domain on the day of the sports. Or Williamson moved that the request be granted provided -the conditions laid down by tho Oounoil as to pay meat of contribution and apology for letter, bo compiled with. Or Scott seconded. Or Gathbertaon sold that though he waa oppcaad to the sale of lfquoc (n the Domain, he would support the present application, as the Oounoll having grunted panumlon to the Oaledontan Soolety, could not wit hold a like privilege' from the Cycling 01 üb. The motion was carried without any dissentient voiceTHE JUBILEE CLOCK. Tendera for the erection of a tower for the reception of tbe J'lbllee Olook ware considered.
