Wellington, Deoember 18 The Wellington papers Btated this evening that Mr Mitchelson intended resigning from the Ministry, and that his place would be filled by Mr Bryce, who is to become Premier should Sir Harry Atkinson's ill-health continue. Mr Mitchelson unhesitatingly denied the statement* It is unders'ood that the Railway Commissioners adhere to their resolution to charge for the carriage of newspapers. The proposals ofthe British Government for fortifying Ihursday Island and King George's Sound have been received. The contributions it is proposed to take from each colony are specified. England bear* the larger share of the expense. The. new Zealand quota will be small. A /'Gazette" extraordinary issued this morning further prorogues Parliament until the 19th February. Chbistch-ROh, D.^occbar 18 A man named William Thompson was thrown from a trap at Killinchy last night and dragged along the road; receiving injuries Uom which he died this morning. "Professor" Jackson, a parachutist, attempted to ascend from a paddock near the Railway Station this evening. A strong norwest wind was blowing and carried the parachute against the telegraph wiies close by. It became detached and Jackson jumped oft escaping unhurt. The balloon was carried over the Port Hil's aod across Lyttelton harbor, on the south side of which it was secured. Dunedin, December 17 The Union Company are advised that the Monowai intended for the intercolonial trade was launched at Dumbarton on the 24th inst. Dunedin, Dvosmbar 18 Mr Nugent' Wood, R.*f., was thrown out of his buggy to-day, his leg being broken.
