PORTUGAL AND THE ZAMBESI
i BRITISH FLAGS CAPTURED. 1 (PER PJMBB AHHOOIATIUN, ) Durban, December 14. Admiral Pinto exhorts the British residents of tho Zambesi to accept the I protection of Portugal. Tho difficulty with the Portuguese as regards the Zambesi haß taken a more serious turn, and Vice -Admiral J. J. Dandrada Pinto, tho commander of the Portuguese Eavy, has attacked the Makololo, holding a territory traversed by the Zambesi River. The Gatling guns of the attacking party killed hundrods of tho natives, and two British flags, previously given by Mr Johnston, were captured. Tho Makalolos, fearing that England had abandoned her rights to the territory, submitted to tho Portuguese Dominion. Admiral Pinto is preparing to conquer the country to Nyanza. The " Pall Mall Gazette " insists that Portugal should be mado to respect Johnston's treaties.
