ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held last evening. Present— The Mayor, and Councillors Fried* lander, Bird, Brooke, Cuthbeitson, Keir, and Scott.
mayor's statement. The Mayor said that the dsbit balance at the Bank was £1247 13s 3 d / The amounts which had been received since last meeting were— Rates, £93 6s ; rents of reserve?, £35 ; licenses, £4 ; eaith sold, libraary account, us; total, 2s. The amount sst rates outstanding was £134 as, CORRESPONDENCE. toilers were read as follows!— (1) From Xshbarton Cycling Club, applying for permission to charge for admission to Domain Sports Ground on New Year's Day when they intend holding a sports gathering ; also applying for a ieduc?ion of £2 10s on their subsidy oTy£*°» owing to the loss and inconvenience to which they had been put through the track not being ready for the contemplated sports on December 16. Permission granted to charge on the date m qoestion; but it was decided that the rebate could not be allowed, as the delay m getting ready the ground was not the fauU of the Council,— (2) From the Ca'edonian Society, ar plying for the right to charge for admission to the Domain Spoits Ground on Boxing Day, and for permission to sell the privileges of a publican's, luncheon, and confectioner's >ooth. Permission to charge for admission was granted, also permission to sell the booths. Some dscussion took place with reference to the application for a publican's tooth. Crs Brooke, Keir, and Cuthbertson -opposed the application, but the other Conn. -cUlors held that to refuse permission now would be to break faith with the Society, as 00 intimation had been given them when they agreed to pay a subsidy for the ground that j£ey would not be allowed to have a booth. The Mayor and others intimated that though supporting the present application they did not feel bound m respect to any future ones. and the Mayor said that next year he would oppose any liquor being sold on the ground. — (3) From tbe Police, with reference to two lamp-posts which had been broken. It was resolved to make application to the persons who broke the pos s to pay the cost of replacing them. — (4) From the Ashburton Fire Brigade, applying for payment of the annual subsidy. The amount was passed for pay«\ meat.--(5) From Mr H. M. Jones and the Volunteer Diill Shed Trustees, offering to lease Borough Reserve. The offer of the Volunteers was accepted.— (6) From Mr E. *tcKee offering to lease Borough Reserve. :The offer was accepted.— Several unimportant letters were dealt with. ENGINEERS' It* PORT'
■The Engineers reported as follows :— Clock ■Tower— Three tenders were received and •p^ned b? the Works Committee for the addition to the Library building designed for the reception of the Jubilee Town Clock, but as all the amounts ware higher than expected the Committee resolved to refer the matter .'to the Council. — Formation of Streets s The Works Committee recommend that as soon a s convenient the labor gang be employed to jnake Dobson street passable between Cass and William streets, and a'so to form part of Cox street West near the Hospital. Consideration of the matter of the dock tower was deferred till next meeting. ■ The remainder of the report was adopted. SUBSIDY. It was decided oh the motion of Cr Keir to a pp]y to the Fire Insurance Association for an increase of th« annual subsidy, m consequence of the additions made to the Fire Brigade plant. r . pump. The matter of providing a pump for the Domain Sports Ground was on the motion of Cr Brooke referred to the Works Committee. CHANNELS. Cr H. Friedlander pointed out that a number of the side channels required cleaning, and the Engineer was iustructed to have the matter attended to. RATE ROLL. The tender of W. Home at £14 14s for making the rate roll for the Borough was accepted, coa collars. . Tlie tender of J« Heseltine at 6j£d for new .collars and 2>£d for re-badging, for a supply of- dog collars was accepted. HOLIDAYS. It was resolved that the usual holidays at Christmas time be granted. LICENSES' Licenses were granted as follows !— Carriers W; Crooks and H. Dalley j petroleum, H.M. Carson and J. Orr. PAYMENTS. ..- Accounts amounting to £74 13s lod we c passed for payment, miscellaneous business i.vras transacted, and the Council adjourned.
