THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Taking a stroll through the ma ; n street of Ashburton this afternoon I found a very small portion of the shops opsn, contrary to the general wish of the public at large. It certainly grieved me very much to find that we had m our midst a few miserable people ready to grasp at any stray penny that might come within coo>ey of them, even though not obtained by the most honorable way. Lord have mercy upon the covetous, and deliver us from all greedy and hungry shop-keepers. It is all humbug talking about the half-holiday being an inconvenience to their customers. Let it become an established rule to close one half-day m the week, and their customers will soon get accustomed to the change, and no one will be a penny the worse for it. My advice is that all independent customers should transfer their custom to the most honorable observers of the hall-holiday. Myself having dealt for the last two years with one of the poor and miserable sinners I intend to transfer my custom to one who intends to carry out the wishes of a large majority of the public, and I hope that other independent customers will follow suit. It is the only way to bring the erring ones to their senses. Yours elc, Customer. November 20tb, 1889.
