What is expeoted to create a great sensation m railway engineering is a locomotive patented this month m France and abroad by a "Hungarian engineer named M. Ala Bio thy, Aooordlng to the pttenee, the ordinary speed of this engine is to be 75 miles an hour, and will admit of being inoreused by 17 miles an hour. Mr Boothy onoases his engine and tender m a i-hell of thin iron with the sides parallel, and tapered off to a poiht m front, resembling a ploughshare, and presenting smooth surf cob. Where great speed it not absolutely reqilred, but rather the pulling of a heavy train, this eagiae Is oialmed t6 be Bpootally adapted by reason of the enorm ue power it >■ capable of geueratirg. The power is secured, ,the pa eatee contends, by two | boilers 16_ feet long, the barrels of whioh stand one above the other, 298 tubes, two p dr* of oyiiuders 16| m. diameter by 19$ m. stroke, and driving wheel* 9ft 9sin n diameter. The engine i» so oonatruoted as to be oapable of taking, without difficulty, a ourve as sharp as six ohains radius. If tnis engine proves a suocess, the consumption of fuel, on account of the diminished air resistance, will fall to a point hitherto unthought of. Although this new engine and te jder will be 12 tons heavier aud 22 feet longer than any at present running, the permanent way would, it is urged, be quite strong onough, and any extra high speed could be performed by it without more risk than there is m running at the ordinary speed of to-duy with our present locomotives — Tho" Railway News."
