ASHBURTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

a, The ordinary meeting of the Aahburton Borough Oounoil was held last evening. Present : The Mayor and Councillors Williamson, Soott, Keir, Outhbortßon, Scaly, Bird, and Maofarlane.

An apology was reoeived for the absence of Or Friedlander. MAVOn'S BTATEMENT. The Mayor said that the dobit balance at the Bank was £1849 Is Gd. The amounts whioh had been reoeived sinoo last meeting wore : — Rates, £31 6s ; rents of roseives, £15 3s ; rent of Pound, £5 ; licenses, £7 ; Library aooount, £1 15s; refund sundries, 17s Gd. Total, £61 Is Gd. The amount of outstanding rateß was £346 9s. OORBEBPONDENOI, Lettera were read (1) From Oharltable Aid Board acknowledging part payment of Council's contribution. (2) From Audit Office returning oertified balance-sheet. (8) From Mr 0. Beard offering to lease Borough Reserve. — Referred to the Resorves Committee.

Permission to burn rubbish was granted subject to the ugual conditions to Messrs R. MoOwen and M. Rooney. ELEOTBIC IiKJHTINd. The Lighting Committee reported as follows .—Your Committee having considered the letterß from the Engineer of the Gulober Eleotrio Light Company, and othor informa--1 tion on the subjoot of eleolr>o lighting, beg to I report : " That while the Oommittoe are m favor of the eleotrio lighting of tho Borough they would reoommend the Oounoil to defer Ihe mattor for the present, Booing that improvements m this branoh of aoience are daily taking plaoe, and also that the saving at present Bbown on the undertaking would not bo sufficient to warrant tbe Oounoil adopting the sobome." Tho report was adopted. THE LIDItARY. Tho Library Committee reoommended the adoption of a code of ruleß for the better management of tho reading-room, The rules were adopted and it was deoided to have them printed, The Committee reoommended tbat a grant of £10 m addition to about an equal amount m hand, should be made for the purchase of new bookß. The Oonnoil deoided to defer the matter till next finanoial year, the understanding being that tbe sum asked for should then be granted. ENGINEERS' BErORT. Tho Engineers reported upon the work done by tbe labor gang during the pact fortnight. With respeot to the water oart, whiob iB now required, they suggested that either another horßO be procured for fivo or six weeks to oomplete the works m tbe Domain, or that the watering should be let by oontraot. It was resolved to prosecute forthwith those persona who had failed to oomply with the no.ioeß Borved on thorn by tho Inspeotor. NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION.

A deputation, consisting of Major Steward, Mo&srs fj.Bßot and Quano waited on the Oouno;l to solicit a contribution towards tho fund for the representation of tbo distriot at the Exhibition to bo held m Dunedin. A long disouseion took plaoe, and it wbb resolved on the motion of Or Williamson to vote tbe Bum of £10. An amendment to defer consideration till nest meeting was lost. nonouou reserves.
