ASHBURTON WESLEYAN CHURCH
The quarterly meeting of oirouit officials was held m the Cameron street Ohuroh, on 1 Monday evening. There was a large at end* [ Bnoe—repreaentativea being present from the following congregations, viz.: Aahburton, Willowby, Wakanui, Hinds and Kyle. The Rev W. Morloy (obairman of the Canterbury distriot) presided, Membership returna were reported as follows :—Fully aooredited, 195; on trial, 8; removals, 2; withdrawn, 5; communioants, 46; oateohumenß, 113. . The inoome for the quarter was £178 10s lOd, and the expenditure £129 15a 3d. The ordinary inoome was £10 less than the expeuditure, but epeoial subscriptions throughout the oirouit Beoured the reduction of the oirouit debt from £85 4b 5d to £36 8s lOd. At a subsequent stage of the meeting, a disoussion tool* pla,oe on the question of oirouit flnanoo, and com. mitteeß were appointed m the several centres to work thQroqßhly the envelope system. The opinion was strongly expressed that if there were Bystematio and proportionate giving all legitimate demands would be met. Arrange. mentß were made for the annual Home Mission services throughout the oirouit on, Sunday next, October 6th, and anniversaries will be held at Willowby (3undav 8ohool), Wakanui, Waterton, and Qmds during the ensuing quarter. The Sunday School returns presented showed, of schools, 6,; teachers, 45; scholars on roll, J}9£; average attendance, 262. The Chairman noted the encouraging f aot that 25 per cent of the soholars wera returned qb junior ohuroh members m oateobumen olaeseß. On the motion of Mr Chapman (senior oirouit steward) a cordial and hearty invitation was given to the Rev J. N. Buttle to remain another year as euperintendant. Mr Buttle aooepted thiß expression of confidence and support, and would gladly remain if Conference so appointed. Iq dealing with the appointment of a Heqpnd minister, the Chairman directed a.tientior» to the oonnexional neeeaait^s m providing for married ministers. Mr Chapman moved, and [t was carried unaninjoualy, that Conference be requested to appoint a Bingle man for aqother year, and that the Rev J. T. Burrawa bp ipvjted to remain m the circuit. Mr Bur, rows expressed Mb willingnsps, to do so, Bubjeot to the approval of Qonfereoqo. A request Was preferred for a grant of £50 from the Home Mißßion Fund, contingent on the refußal of Conference to appoint a eingle man for another year.
