A young Bussian giantess has reaobed Paris. Her name is Elisabeth Liska, she is only seven yearß of age, and is already six feet bis inobea m height. Her parents are of ordinary stature, and her brothers and sisters, of whom Bhe has five, are not above average height. Her abnormal growth only commenced when she was four years of age, but tha doctors say she will continue to grow for some time to come. She measures 8 feet 13£ inches round tbe waist and 3 feet 11 inchea round tbo ohest.

The friends of Mr ftfld Mrs Puttman, of the Somerset Hotel, took pirt m a pleasant little social funotion laßt evening, the oooasion beipg the oelebration of the birthday of Mrs Pattman. A Booial gathering— song and danee — of a very enjoyable charaoter was held m the room off ths hotel, whioh was formerly used as a billiard room. This was very tastefully decorated for the occasion, and admirably suited the purpose to which it was devoted. The party broke up m the small hours, after having spent a very pleaßant evening.
A party of deaf and dumb foreigners', visit* ing Paris to Bee the Exhibition, were entertained a tew days ago at a olub of deaf and dumb olerks, artisans, and professional people. The foreigners, as soon as the introductions were over, began conversation by signs, not only among themselves, but with their Frenoh hosts. Among the visitors who were entertained were Americans, Austrianß, Belgians, Swedeß, and Germans. Several speeohes of welcome and reply were delivered, and at the close of the " punch," M. A story recently went the rou#/l of the Presß to ths tffuot that Mr Edison bad invented a maohine that would enable persons to see objeots at great distances. Thje story was oontradioted, but it appears the idea is being made the subjeot of experiments. A Frenchman, M. Oourtonne, has made a similar discovery, and will give experiments with his "t6!6phote" at the end of the present year, M. Oourtonne avers that his invention will be able to transmit luminous vibrations through any kind of obstacle on a wire not only for hundreds, but thousands of kilometres.
Our Paris correspondent reports the follow, ing case of diabolioal oruelty : — A woman named Loel and a Bhoemiker named Oornu, with whom ehe was living, have beon arrested, the woman for heating a flatiron and applying it to the body of her son, seven years of age, and tho man for hanging him up by tho heols to the ceiling of the garret m whioh they lived. We learn from the " Taieri Advooate " that the annual report of the Henley dairy f aotory for the period ending 31st August last shows that about £1200 of net profit has been made out of the milk passed through the factory during the past season. Mrs Emma Gatawood (ooloured) has just died at Soottdale, Pa., aged 117 years. She was the mother of 11 ohildren, all of whom, except one, are living, and over 50 years of age. She was the grandmother of 57 ohildren, the great-grandmother of 46 ohildren, and the great-great-grandmother of 36 children. She waa born m Virginia, and was a slavo for a great number of years.
The Press Association wires from Wellidg* ton that it is understood a portfolio has been offered to Captain Russell, who has taken time to oonsider. A message to the "Press " from its Napier correspondent says that it is rumored there that Captain Bussell has aocepted and that this is pretty well authenticated. Considerable excitement prevails at Vasse, Western Australia, owing to the reoent aotion of Archdeacon Leoaille, the Roman Gatholio priest m that district, m exhuming the bodies of two men — Protestants — who many years ago were interred m the Oatbolio Cemetery by (he wish of their Catholic relatives, and by consent of the Oatholio Bishop. Arohdeaoon Leoaille proposes to bury them m the unconseorated portion ot the cemetery. A memorial haß been forward to the Governor by the residents of Vasße protesting against the aotion of the Arohdeaoon.
Referring to the dieoovery of a new comet the " Auokland Star Bays :— Mr J. T. Stephen, eon, F.R.A.S., has discovered a new oomet. He found it on Tuesday evening, at an elevation of only a few degrees above the northern horizon Its position at midnight would be nearly nor h. It is visible to the unaided eye, but would require very keen vision to distinguish it from a faint star. The tail seems to extend on both sides of tbe nucleus. It is thought to be identical with a oomet discovered at New York on July 6th, and whioh was m perihelion about August 4th.
A committee meeting of the ABhburton Cricket Olub was held last evening m the County Council offices, when there was a good atteudanoe of mombera. It was arranged that the matoh with tbe Lanoaßter Park Cub take plaoe on tbe 9:h October aod the Seoretary was instructed to wrilo to the Ohrißt'a College and Midland Clubs to arrange for matches, with the former on the Ist or 11th of November, and with the latter on the 16th Peoember.
