NEW ZEALAND HEROES

A list of awards made by the Oounoil of the Royal Humane Soolety of Australasia Includes half a score names of persons m New Zealand who have been the recipients of honors. Bronza medals are to be given respect vely to : •William Smltb, twenty-one years, ship's steward of the Rotcmahana. Mrs Robert Hardy, of Auokland, having been precipitated off the wharf into the harbor Mr Smith went to her assistance and supported tbe lady alongside ona of the stringers till a boat reaoued them. MoKenale Commons, thirty-two years, shipping agent, rescued a ohild named King from Taureng* harbor, Auckland. The child had twice sunk In a running ourrent, and thc-y were enabled to reach aafe'y by a rope from a steam launch, Geo. S. Ballen, thirteen years, Thames, rescued Gordon Lamb, seven years, from drowning In the river there, swimming with his oharge against an ebb tide to the landing steps, A r thus Holber'on Miles Bralthwalte, thirteen year*, of Hastings, reaoued G. OHtrel), nine years, from the Heretaunga, swimming with him on to a snag, from wbioh they were taken off In a canoe. Mr Rainbow, matter of the sohool, who was In oharge of the br-ys, tr'ed also to save Oottrell, but, being unable to swim, was drowned; Certificates of Merit were granted to tbe following :— John Harvey, twenty-one years, New P'ymooth, who reaoued J. McGlven. three and a half year's, by swimming 30yds to where tbe ohlld was sinking, and bringing the boy ashore. Henry Mitchell and Lawß">n Robins, seamen of the bat que Cormorant, rasoued Robert Poroy G«<hfjm at Lyttelton.
