DR. CAMPBELL.
ADXIutIDE, August 16. Dr Campbell, lately a member of the Cockburn Ministry, made a startling statement m the Council on Tuesday. He said the present of tbe Colony is very serious ; population is •decreasing and the national debt increasing at an equally alarming rate. The population at the end of last year had decreased by three thousand m apite of six thousand births. Tbe national debt is £60 per head, and direct taxation is 13s 4d per head Taxation was becoming an intolerable burden. He foresaw from the present clamor for an increased Land Tax that ere long they would probably have a heavy progressive Land Tax, which would weigh down the wealthiest men m the Colony.
