Large donations of food are being sent to Samoa. The latest reports show that 3c,000 human beings are in a state of semi-starvation, and further assistance is urgently needed.
H.M.S. Egeria has annexed the Phoenix and Union groups, lying in the route of the Pacific cable. No opposition was offered. It is reported that the American 'flag was flying at several of the islands of the group.
Dean, late Town Clerk of Thames, was arrested at Norfolk Island and brought here. He goes to Auckland by the Hauroto.
Mount Kemble miners have again struck.

Sir Jas. Hector says the coal plains of Gippslaod could Dot profitably be worked on a large scale, but as an indication of the existence of coal the fields are of great value.
The customs detectives unearthed an extraordinary wholesale systematic robbery of goods from the lighters used in removiDg cargo under bond. A valuable plant was discovered at Fort Melbourne.
