Melbourne, August 7.

William Thompson, convicted of embezzling to the amount of on the Colonial Bank at Yarraglen, of which he was manager, was sentenced to-day to five years hard labor with a term of solitary confinement. The conntry party m the Legislative Assembly who are favorable to a further increase m the stock tax held another meeting to-day. Twenty attended, but nothing definite was decided on, and the meeting adjourned^ for a week. The annual show of the Victorian Poultry and Dog Society opened today m the Exhibition buildings. There were splendid exhibits, including some from Tasmania and New Zealand.
