Wellington, July 17 The Obemie case ia still the sensation of Wellington and claims all attention. The Italiaa residents m tIK city are profuße ia declarations of Ohemls' innocence and art oonfident that the death sentence will be oommuted. Upwards of 300 copies of the petition to the Governor have circulated In the city and already 4000 fligna tures have been* at:aohed. Mr N. Fernandoß who initiated the affair states that ha has received telegrams from various parts of the coloay asking that copies of the petition be forwarded,. A rumor was ourreat iv town to-day that Dt Oahiil had received a threatening letter to the effect that if Choraia were hanged he Would beehot, but it had been, ascertained that the dootor had received an anonymous le.tar hiutiog that he should have been more moioiful to the acoueed. No threat whatever was used. A. statement made by the prisoner to Mr Jelliooe who visited theTerrooe gaol yesterday has beea forwarded to the Minister of Justice. It had no relation to tha fact 3of the case but simply referred to a oomplaint against the gaoler relative to the employment of counsel. A reply has been reoeived from the Minister to the effect that an enquiry haß been ordered.

Three of the papers published m the Wairarapa, viz , the " Daily," the '•Star" and the "Observer" m their leading columns declared that the jury had no evidence to justify the verdict of guilty. A farther sensation was oaaaed iv town this evening when it was announced that Me 0. E. Bunoy, leading ouunsel for Ohemlfl, w*s dead. All through the trial ie was known that Mr Bunny was Buffering, but his Indomitable plaok troald not allow him to engage assistance, and on Saturday *hen he addressed the jury it was freely remarked that it was wonderful how he rmneged to last it out. Since Saturday Mr Bunny has been confined to bio bed, and under the oare of a oouple of medloil gentlemen. It was known that he was suffering from a mild form of typhoid fever, but no serious result was expeoted until late this after noon when the disease took a turn for the worse, and at 5.30 he brea'hed his last.
